Beijing-based data centre operator 21Vianet is a surprise entrant into the contest for mobile broadband spectrum in Hong Kong.
The Nasdaq-listed firm is one of four companies to seek permission to take part in the auction of 2.3GHz spectrum next month.
21Vianet hasn't responded to requests for comment, but the move does seem a stretch for a compay that describes itself as "the largest carrier-neutral Internet data center services provider in China."
The firm raised $224m in its IPO last April and includes among its backers GGV Capital, Matrix Partners China and Meritech Capital Partners. In its latest quarterly filing it announced a profit of 62 million yuan ($9.7m) on 114% higher sales of 262 million yuan. Its Nasdaq stock rose 15% to $10.00 overnight following the move.
The others seeking spectrum are three of the city's five mobile operators - China Mobile Hong Kong, Hong Kong Telecommunications (a vehicle for PCCW) and Hutchison Telephone.
